All it takes is a little planning to ensure your belongings are secure and safe. Here are some Self Storage tips and tricks to choosing, packing and maintaining your storage unit.

Do not leave anything in your unit that will attract pests.

Place dryer sheets in your boxes for extra protection against unwanted pests in your storage unit and boxes. Make sure you replace them monthly for maximum benefit.

If you are storing a vacuum or wet vac, make sure the vacuum bag and filter is empty and clean to avoid attracting pests. Same with appliances, make sure they are clean and dry when stored.

Canned foods may be stored in storage units, but perishable food products, even pet food will spoil and attract pests.

Avoid humidity

Use bubble wrap to protect fragile and breakable items. Pack these items separately.

Use box filler, such as newspaper or old rags when packing boxes. This prevents anything in the box from shifting when being moved or transferred.

Clearly label boxes on at least two sides of the box for easy and quick identification. Place the fragile items in the unit last and on top.

Store mattresses flat and furniture such as sofas upright to prevent gravity from taking effect. Place books flat to avoid damaging their spines. Too many books in one box may make the box too heavy.

Maximize Your Space

Make your unit truly an affordable self storage unit but filling the unit. Put items in dresser drawers, fill (clean) garbage cans for brooms, shovels and rakes.

Stack boxes by weight and size. Disassemble bed frames, tables and other furniture.  This will better protect each individual piece. Place screws in a plastic bag and tape to the furniture.
